All it took was me walking under a ladder and then later in the day, I got spanked. I cannot remember what I did to receive that spanking, but I have always remembered the correlation of walking under the ladder and getting spanked.

Bad luck.

I mean really, what is worse than walking under a ladder?

Getting your path crossed by a black cat? Breaking a mirror? Spilling salt?

I did not realize it was Friday the 13th until I was checking my daughter into her 5 year old well visit appointment. I knew this visit was more than just the typical weigh, measure and simple questions about her development. It was more about completing her vaccinations to get her prepared for Kindergarten.

She knew this too and was prepared to be her bravest yet.

But, nothing can really prepare a 5 year old for three shots and a TB test.

The last time she was pricked with anything was about a year and a half ago. She had an allergy screening that resulted with her almost going into shock. She ended up in cold sweat, pale and very sleepy. It was not a pleasant experience.

I hoped for the best today and now that it is over, I am thankful my husband was off of work to help me out.

After her TB test, she completely freaked out. I never remember her acting the way she did today. Aiyana has never been the one to throw tantrums and yell, but today she screamed and if she knew how to curse, she probably would have done that too.

She begged us to take her home, she pleaded with the nurse to not give her shots. There was no other choice than to hold her down and let the nurse do her job. As I fought back my own tears, I saw Aiyana’s face turn white, the beads of sweat started to form and she begged us to take her home to nap. My heart stopped in fear of her actually going into shock. The nurse stopped and asked her if she wanted some water.

My desperation set in.

As a mother I would do anything to calm Aiyana down. And I seriously mean anything because out of my memory bank, I remembered how badly Aiyana wanted Squinkies.

Squinkies

Months ago, I received an email to review Squinkies, but I politely declined. We have so many toys filling up this house already, why would I want something with so many tiny pieces to add to the choas?

After Aiyana found out about Squinkies, she has been asking for them all.the.time! Being brilliant at avoiding toys like that, I have kept us a Squinkie free household.

But as I saw her so terrified on that table, I told her that after she gets her shots, we can go get her a set of Squinkies. I have never seen such a turn in emotion, not only did she smile, but there were even some giggles – I love those giggles!

Desperation.

As she walked to the car, she walked a little taller. Although it was so traumatic, she walked out of there being proud that she did it. And even more excited that she is ready for Kindergarten.

And I will never let her know that today is Friday the 13th because for the rest of her life, she will probably remember this day and associate it with her traumatic experience of getting her Kindergarten vaccinations.

Her bad luck.

Of course, the next place we visited was Target. Aiyana chose her set of Squinkies, so proud that she earned it. And because Chloe was so good in the office, we let her pick out a set too. Although, I think Chloe was being good in fear that it was her turn next.

Now that we are a Squinkies household (and I say household because I do imagine that one day they are going to take over this place!), I have to admit that I actually like them. Not only did they keep the girls occupied during our lunch out, but Aiyana has been playing with them all afternoon.

Squinkies

That left me with a little bit of time to enjoy our weather and squeeze in some reading.

reading outside

And the hubs? He actually took a nap – outdoors!

Naptime

The Squinkie are so worth it!

I never thought I would bribe my kids with toys, but I have learned as a parent – never say never. How do your children handle vaccinations? Have you ever bribed your children with anything?

Why Not A Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup? http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/05/reeses-peanut-butter-cup-smores.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/05/reeses-peanut-butter-cup-smores.html#comments Wed, 11 May 2011 20:22:53 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7750 Aiyana got her big blue eyes and beautiful long eyelashes from her daddy, but that is not the only thing she inherited from him. They both share one very important and huge love.

Peanut butter.

My daughter loves peanut butter on everything. Spread it on a tortilla and roll it up, she is a happy girl. Spread it on an apple, she is in heaven. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are her favorite, but, really, what does peanut butter go best with?

Chocolate!

Any time we get ready to go camping, she never forgets to remind me to buy everything we need to make s’mores. It is the one thing she looks forward to – staying up past her bedtime, hanging out at the campfire and indulging on a load of sugar that not even I can pass up.

As we were walking though Target, I saw the display of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars. I asked her to grab a few of the multipackages. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Aiyana: “Mommy, can we get peanut butter cups for the s’mores?”

Me: ” We need the chocolate bars for our s’mores.”

Aiyana: “Why can’t we put peanut butter cups in them?”

After I pondered the thought for a second, we grabbed both Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Hershey’s Chocolate Bars. I knew she was onto something.

I was right, because this is what we came back with..

The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were a hit in our camp and it seems everyone reached for them before the Herhsey’s Chocolate Bars.

Reese's Smore

So, to everyone who commented on our camping post asking if that is a Peanut Butter Cup – it sure is!

Mom’s Healthy Lifestyle – Just Add Kids! http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/05/moms-healthy-lifestyle-just-add-kids.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/05/moms-healthy-lifestyle-just-add-kids.html#comments Mon, 09 May 2011 17:50:42 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7721 If you asked me 6 years ago what I do to live a healthy lifestyle, I would have quickly replied, “I work out, before or after work – I work out at the gym.”

Five years ago, I was blessed with my first child and my gym visits grew further and further apart. Life with a newborn was a whirlwind that left me devoting all my time to caring for my daughter. When she turned a few months old, we fell into a schedule that allowed me some time on my treadmill. She enjoyed her swing or bouncy seat as I worked up a sweat. As she got older, my treadmill sessions turned into walks around the neighborhood followed up with simple at home workout routines. The walks continued through the end of my second pregnancy.

Just before Chloe was born, I decided to join the gym again. I envisioned having time to work out, release stress and drop the baby weight. Those dreams did not consist of the work it would take to care for two children and I quickly realized that my gym membership was a bad investment.

A healthy lifestyle is important to me and I knew I needed to do something about the baby weight, so I relied on the walks again, found time for my treadmill, but eventually I found a better way to stay active and healthy.

My kids.

With two young daughters, I am constantly on the go. Sitting on the couch to watch a mid-day television show is completely out of the question and if it were not for my DVR, I would never get to watch any of my favorite shows. Instead, I fill my days with kicking around a soccer ball in the backyard. I burn calories teaching my daughter to jump rope. I get a workout by having hula hoop contests and riding kids sized scooters (really, you can feel those gluteus muscles burn!). Instead of driving to the park, we walk. We have dance parties and I give them piggyback rides. And the best part of staying active with my kids is it is fun, not only for me, but for them too. It is quality time that we will all treasure, but it is also helping me live a healthier lifestyle and teaching them to do the same.

My kids help me stay active, but they also help me eat better. I am an example to them and usually what I eat, they eat too. I am not going to snack my day away with chips or other empty calories. Since becoming afruits and vegetables mother, I make better choices with what goes into my body. These are the most critical years at creating a healthy lifestyle for my children, one that will set the pace for a lifetime of good habits, so my bad habits were quickly broken. And I am thankful for that.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones is making it easier to stay on track with a healthy meal plan without spending time on prep work beforehand. Their products provide a variety of delicious, convenient and portion controlled meals and snacks that contain lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. And now they are offering two new breakfast items – like the new Egg, Sausage & Cheese Wrap and the French Toast with Turkey Sausage. Plus, the packaging tells you the Weight Watchers PointsPlus values in each serving, allowing you to conveniently plan for the day. Visit www.eatyourbest.com for more information.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Weight Watchers Smart Ones and received a promotional item and coupons to facilitate my review.

Until then, here are a few photos of our camping trip over Easter weekend. I am not kidding. I am very behind!

The girls had a wonderful time…

Crane Air Purifier {Review and Giveaway} http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/crane-air-purifier-review-and-giveaway.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/crane-air-purifier-review-and-giveaway.html#comments Wed, 27 Apr 2011 05:55:19 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7690 cranelogo

Our family is very familiar with Crane’s products. We use their humidifier with our daughters, but now Crane has introduced a new product to their line, the Crane Air Purifier – available exclusively at Target.

Now that we are in the middle of allergy season and we have a new puppy in our home, I want to protect my daughters from allergens. Crane’s Air Purifier is perfect for doing so. Not only is the design cute, but the purifier is perfect for their bedroom with a quiet setting for night time use. The filter is easily replaceable and because it collects up to 95% of airborne allergens, I know the air in their room is much cleaner.

About Crane Purifier:

Dust mites, pollen, mold, and pet dander all can cause watery eyes, skin irritation, congestion, stuffy noses and bouts of coughing.   Physicians are now discovering that the solution to the problem of many of these irritants is reducing the pollutants in the air people breathe.  Air purifiers are one of the easiest ways to clean the air in your home.  Crane’s new Frog Air Purifier with HEPA Type filter  will ease a child’s allergy and asthmatic symptoms for better breathing and sleeping at night (suggested retail $49.99 available exclusively at Target in April 2011).

Crane’s new Frog Air Purifier includes a HEPA type filter, removing 95% of dust and airborne allergens.  The air purifier has three setting, one for quiet operation, and includes a complete filter set, ready to use straight of the box.  The filter set offers a three level filtration system which includes a Particle Filter, HEPA Type Filter, and a Active Carbon Filter that helps remove airborne allergens, bacteria, viruses and germs before the air goes back into the room. Crane’s Frog personal Air Purifier is perfect for a small child’s room.   Cleaner air in your home benefits everyone.

Americans spend about 90% of their lives indoors.  The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, on average, indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Considering the amount of irritants that are present in the air today, those who suffer from allergies and other breathing disorders are challenged to find effective ways to clean the air that they breathe within their home environment. Air purifiers are designed to eliminate impurities in the air, even those impurities which are so microscopic they are impossible to see.

I love having fresh, beautiful flowers in our home, but because I knew we were going out of town, I selected the Fragrant Gardenia Topiary to review. Even though I was expecting them, they still came at the perfect time. I was having a difficult day and FedEx drove up with this box:

ProFlowers Box

It definitely put a smile on my face because when I saw the green ProFlowers label, I knew it was something for me! Inside the box was my carefully packaged Fragrant Gardenia Topiary!

Gardenia

It arrives in bud form, although one had already bloomed. I love how green and healthy the plant looks (and still does). There are lots of buds that are just waiting to bloom and I cannot wait to smell the Gardenia fragrant in our house!

Thankfully, Proflowers sent along an information card so I know exactly how to care for my new plant. I found the perfect spot for it and I am looking forward to enjoying it year-round.

I was so impressed with ProFlowers, I have since made two purchases from them (for the grandmothers) and I am planning on making another this week!

Here is part of the text my Mother-in-Law sent me when I was out of town and she received her flowers:

Wow! I found this really big box on my porch today from ProFlowers! I double-checked the name it was really MINE! No Mistake. After I opened it and cut the stems, as directed, and placed 24, count’em 24, beautiful ROSES into the vase that was included, I still hadn’t come across anything inside the box that told me who would do something so unusual for me. But as I started taking the box apart so it would fit in the recycle bin, I finally uncovered the mystery! Thank YOU so much!

Our family is always ready for a good game and this time, Hasbro has helped us out with Bop It!

Bop-It! definitely puts our quick thinking skills to the test and challenges our hand-eye coordination. Bop It! instructs the player to shout, twist, pull or bop in random order and when you respond correctly, the instructions are called out faster. I thought I did pretty well until my husband gave it a whirl, then the competitive side in me took over. It remembers the highest score and of course, I could not let my husband out rank me!

For added fun, Bop-It can also be played with a group of people and within the instructions, it has you “pass it”. It is perfect to pass around at a party, around the campfire or between children in the back seat of the car. Bop-It is definitely travel friendly since there are no pieces involved, just one gaming device!

Hasbro has teamed up with TOMBSTONE Pizza to offer a fabulous deal to set you up with the perfect game night! St. John Vianney Church Fire – Prayers Needed http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/st-john-vianney-church-fire-thoughts-needed-sticky.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/st-john-vianney-church-fire-thoughts-needed-sticky.html#comments Wed, 20 Apr 2011 02:00:56 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7617 Last Saturday I woke up to very tragic news. The church I grew up attending caught on fire and was completely destroyed. I was in shock and extremely saddened. I could not believe the news and did not want to. I hoped it was an accident, but soon the news broke that it was an act of arson.

How can someone to something so terrible?

Yesterday, it all hit me – hard. I drove by the church and I had to stop. It was emotional and still is just thinking about the destruction. A place of worship, a place of hope, a place so many considered home – all taken away by someone.

But, that someone cannot take away everything. They cannot take away the memories I have of sitting in church with my parents every Sunday as a child. They cannot take away the memories of going to catechism all through childhood and into my teen years. I will always remember my First Holy Communion and my Confirmation. The days in high school when I volunteered with my friends seem just like yesterday and now, I will be sure they stay strong in my heart. All the memories will never be taken away.

And if that person thought they were bringing the church down, they were wrong. They may have destroyed a beautiful building, but they made the congregation stronger. The m have members of the parish ever had such a deep since of belonging and instead of this tragedy breaking them down, it has made them stronger. In the end, a church is not the building, but it is the people who gather together and believe so deeply in the same thing. And together, with hope, love, belief and forgiveness, the church will be rebuilt and St. John  Vianney Catholic Church will always be. And I have a feeling it will be better, not because of the building, but because of the community of people and the tragedy overcome.

Please keep the parish of St. John Vianney in your thoughts and prayers.

This is how I will always remember the church…

Where Have I Been? http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/where-have-i-been.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/where-have-i-been.html#comments Tue, 19 Apr 2011 20:32:18 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7592 This just might be my longest span without blogging to date.

It is not that I have not wanted to, it is just that I have been on the go, non-stop.

My girls and I have been taking advantage of our beautiful spring weather – although some days it feels like we are already slipping into summer. We added some color to our backyard and we planted seeds that will bring us some beautiful tall sunflowers!

Even Bailey joined in on the yard work, he sure can pull weeds!

Outside play has been our favorite past time, but that means by the end of the day, we are exhausted and even I have been knocking out shortly after the girls go to sleep.

Poor Chloe got sick and recovered just in time for my husband and I to go out of town for a few nights – alone! My daughters had fun at Grandma’s house while my husband and I spent a few nights of adult time in Laughlin. We had a blast, to say the least. I had so much fun playing Roulette and Craps. All that fun hit me hard the next morning – a few Advil took care of that!

When we got home, reality set in because not only do we need to get ready for this weekend’s camping trip, but I also need to get ready for Aiyana’s 5th birthday party next weekend. Washing windows, cleaning our travel trailer, filling out invites and buying party supplies have been consuming my time. And now, I need to pack!

I will have a few reviews and giveaways posted shortly, but my regular blogging will probably have to wait until after the party – so much to do. And I will definitely post some pictures of the event!

6 Ways To Save Like An Extreme Couponer http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/6-ways-to-save-like-an-extreme-couponer.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/6-ways-to-save-like-an-extreme-couponer.html#comments Tue, 12 Apr 2011 14:00:16 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7531 Guest Post By: Andrea WorochPiggy Bank

1. Start Small
Don’t try to go extreme all at once. Take it step by step, rather than show up at a checkout with 50 coupons and little idea what you’re doing.

2. Never Pay For Coupons
There are some things in this life you just shouldn’t pay for, and a coupon is one of them. Paying someone to clip or organize your coupons defeats the purpose of living frugally. Instead, surf Sunday newspaper ad supplements for coupon savings; ask your neighbors for their unwanted papers; or dive inside a recycled dumpster or two. Also, free online coupon sites like CouponSherpa.com give consumers access to a multitude of coupon codes and printable coupons for thousands of merchants.

3. Get Organized
A little organization can go a long way. Always create a shopping list and have your coupons and shopping strategy organized before you even enter the store. Use an expandable coupon binder to sort coupon inserts by date, categories and expiration dates. Transfer to a small couponizer only those you’ll need for a specific shopping trip.

4. Location, Location, Location
Where you shop is a key factor in making the best use of your time and coupons. Only shop at locations that allow coupon stacking and combining coupons with in-store offers. Don’t be afraid to call and ask about policies before you show up. You don’t want to wind up embarrassed at the checkout line with a handful of useless coupons.

5. Loyalty Rewards
Always take advantage of club membership rewards. These programs are usually free and have many savings perks, like rewards points, cash back programs, and double points for every certain amount you spend.

6. Don’t Be Greedy
This is often where extreme couponers cross over into the world of hoarding. Only shop for items you actually need, products you can stock up on that aren’t perishable, and those you can donate. Remember, a bargain is only a bargain if you can actually use the purchase. If your pantry has expanded into your living room and the kids are sleeping on rolls of toilet paper, you’ve probably reached hoarder status.

7 Common Mistakes First-Time Parents Make http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/7-common-mistakes-first-time-parents-make.html http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/2011/04/7-common-mistakes-first-time-parents-make.html#comments Sat, 09 Apr 2011 15:00:48 +0000 Michelle http://www.flyinggigglesandlollipops.com/?p=7463 Guest Post By Lisa Pecos

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs you will ever have, and no stage is more difficult than the first few months with your first child. It is easy to be led astray by misguided assumptions and poorly thought-out plans, and it is practically impossible to completely avoid making any mistakes. Parenting is after all a learning process, but you can avoid some of the most common mistakes simply by being aware of them in advance. Here are seven of the most common issues that arise for first-time parents.

1. Not sleeping

Everyone knows that new parents are commonly sleep deprived, but it does not have to be so bad. Especially if you and your spouse can find ways to share the load and balance your time, then you should be able to get close to your usual amount of sleep every day. Granted, the sleep may be patchy and at unconventional times, but you can get it if you try.

2. Unrealistic time expectations

Many new parents like to think that they will still have plenty of free time when the baby is sleeping or entertaining herself, but you might be surprised by how much of your time is occupied by baby-related tasks even when the baby is asleep. Yes, you should be able to preserve at least some of your personal time, but it may not be as much as you expect.

3. Believing everything you hear

There is a lot of parenting advice out there, and while most of it is harmless, the advice-givers are not always consistent in what they say. Rather than listening to and believing everything you see, try to formulate your own philosophy about parenting, and then listen only to those experts whose beliefs are in line with yours. Also keep in mind that some so-called “parenting experts” are not all they claim to be. Listen to your doctor first and foremost.

4. Spouse neglect

There is no getting around the fact that your baby will be the center of attention in your household, and not just for the first few weeks or months. Parents have to be willing to give up much of themselves in order to care for a child, and this will last until the child is old enough to be independent. For now, try not to let your child get in the way of your connection with your spouse. Find time to talk, to snuggle up without the baby, and to keep your sex life going. Otherwise, bad feelings may develop, and this can affect the entire household.

5. Over-worrying

Many new parents spend so much time reading and worrying about all the things that can wrong with a new child that they become all but convinced that bad things are inevitable. Any time you suspect that something may be wrong with your child, it is best to listen to your intuition and take the child to your doctor as soon as possible. But try not to let your paranoia project problems that are not there, or else you will just make yourself crazy.

6. Over-spending

Although we do not like to admit it, much of what we buy for a newborn baby is more for the parents’ benefit than the child’s. A newborn baby does not need much more than loving parents and a place to sleep, so you do not have to deplete your bank account in preparation for the birth. Get the things you need, and do not forget that you can get a lot of the non-necessities after the baby is born.

7. Losing perspective

First-time parents tend to get wrapped up in the life-changing nature of the event, and as a result they risk seeing the birth of their baby as a much more momentous event than it actually is. Of course, it is one of the most important events in your life, but it is not such a big deal outside of your family. Try to keep things in perspective by reminding yourself that babies are born every day, and do not take it personally when others do not share your wild enthusiasm for your child.

She has a head full of beautiful natural ringlets, but unfortunately I don’t. My hair is somewhere between curly and straight, but most of the time just frizzy – that is, unless I straighten it with a flat iron. A few years ago, I invested in a high end flat iron, an investment that was well worth every penny. It has saved me time and my sanity, all while making my hair look fabulous.

What is the best flat iron?

karmin pro

The folks at HairTools.ca suggest the Karmin G3 Salon Pro. This iron is the first to offer 100% Pure Tourmaline ceramic plates. These plates help your hair to slide through the plates without catching or pulling on your hair.

  • 360 swivel cord so you can easily maneuver around without the cord tangling
  • Variable temperature control up to 450F which allows you to select the perfect temperature based on the hair type. If you have thick or curly hair you need an styling iron that reaches 450f.
  • Professional high grade heating element that allows the iron to heat up quickly and to be used continuously without burning out during your styling.
  • Dual voltage so you can bring your iron to other countries. great for traveling
  • Slim handle design, no more bulky handles that make it hard to hold, with the slim handle it fits perfectly in your hands and is light to use.
  • Curved plates that allow you to not only straighten your hair but you can also curl and style your hair in so many other ways. That’s why we call it a styling iron not a flat iron.

I had the opportunity to try out their Purely Nourishing Moisturizer and Deep Cleansing Foam. I am not new to Bare Escentuals  because a few years ago, while pregnant with Chloe, I started using their bareMinerals makeup – still my favorite. And now I am loving their Skincare line!

This cleansing foam goes a long way. A small amount works it’s way into a rich foamy lather.
